Lumen:Air

Nuit Blanche, 2025 at Humber College

The wind connects us all through its global journey.

We all know the wind.  We hear its howls.  We see it blow through the leaves and branches in the trees.  We feel its warm breeze in the summer and its icy sting in the winter.  As it travels the earth, it brings with it the essence of its past locations.  We can imagine that the same wind swept through our friends and family who live far away.  We envision it bringing a part of us to its next destination.  The wind connects us all through its global journey.

‘Lumen:Air’ is a light and sound installation that represents motion as movement of light and abstract sound, not dissimilar to a wind chime.  It uses real-time audio data gathered from passersby to create light animation as well as a generative soundscape.  The installation aims to shift visitors’ attention from the light they see and soundscapes they hear to the breeze they sense and the natural world by which they are surrounded.

‘Lumen:Air’ explores themes of nature and light, technology and connectivity, as well as emotional connections.

‘Lumen:Air’ explores how technology can facilitate a connection between the natural world and the human experience.  It uses technology, such as LEDs, computers and coding to translate what we see, hear and feel in the wind.  It also uses a technology-based sculpture to output the data in a multisensory experience for visitors.  While technology has increased the tempo of our everyday lives, the technology used in ‘Lumen:Air’ invites visitors to slow down and bring their attention to the natural world.

Lumen:Air has been exhibited at Nuit Blanche (2024), Lumiere at Ontario Place (2024) and Women from Space Festival (2025).
